The Ice-Dragon by George RR Martin Book Review

The Ice-Dragon by George RR Martin
Book Review

Every piece of paper that George RR Martin writes on literally turns to gold. The short-story of the Ice Dragon does not disappoint at all. There is a reason why Martin is going down in history as one of the greatest fiction authors of all time – and this proves it. One of the biggest things that I learned very quickly was that the story was NOT written in the format of his other stories. This reads much easier and is seemingly a children’s or young, young adult novel with adult-like themes.

The Ice Dragon is an eloquent short-story that is about a little girl named Adara, also known as “The Winter’s Child”. The way Martin depicts the child and her development is quite phenomenal. The setting of the entire story takes place on a farm where she lives with her father and her siblings. To her dismay, her mother died during birth. What is drives the story and character development of Adara is her innate “coldness”. She is physically detached from everything and everyone with no signs of emotions. For those who are avid readers of Game of Thrones, you might be thinking she could have been part White Walker, right? Just read it, the story is too good to spoil.

The story continues as the reader is introduced to some intriguing characters, including Adara’s uncle, a dragon rider. Without ruining or spoiling too much of the story, a war is on the horizon,  and the family decides to stay on their farm and defend their lands. Adara on the other hand, known as the Winter’s Child, abandons the farm before its too late. She ventures off into the vast lands to visit her friend, The Ice Dragon. She knows the war is happening and her family is alone with nothing to protect them. As a result, Adara is left to make some frightful and life-altering choices.

The short-story of the Ice-Dragon is a must read by ANY fantasy reader. In my opinion, it is one of the best short-stories that I have ever read. The plot, character development and clever background stories are near award-worthy. To top it off, George RR Martin has partnered with the ever-so-talented Luis Royo to illustrate this story. If you have the opportunity to buy a physical copy, do it! The illustrations enhance the story beyond belief and well-worth the purchase.
